Wheaton, IL Painting, Remodeling & Home Repairs

Wheaton is the DuPage County seat, which is why the courthouse, the government complex and a dense downtown all sit within a few blocks of the Union Pacific West tracks. From Bolingbrook it is a short trip up Naperville Road or Route 59. The housing runs the full range: big prewar brick and stucco homes near the center, postwar ranches filling the blocks around them, and subdivision colonials north of Geneva Road.

Older Wheaton houses mix their materials — brick on the first floor, stucco or wood above, deep soffits that take a beating on the weather side. That changes the prep and the coating for each surface on the same elevation. Inside, the starting point is usually plaster walls, stained woodwork and a small original kitchen. Painting, drywall, flooring, remodeling and windows and doors come from one crew, and the estimate is free.

What the work usually involves in Wheaton

Local housing stock decides what a project really needs. Here is what we plan for in this area.
  • Brick and Stucco Exteriors

Masonry and stucco do not take paint the way siding does. Hairline cracks get filled, failing mortar gets pointed, and the coating has to breathe or it comes off in sheets. We establish what each wall actually is before quoting, because a stucco elevation and a wood elevation on one house need two different systems.

  • Stained Trim and Woodwork

Stained oak trim and built-ins are common in the older houses here, and people are split on painting them. If the decision is to paint, the wood has to be cleaned of old wax, deglossed and sealed with a bonding primer, or the finish stays soft and chips at every edge. If it stays stained, we work around it.

  • Tree Cover and Mildew

The Prairie Path and Lincoln Marsh bring a lot of mature canopy over the older streets. Shade keeps moisture on north elevations, and that is where mildew, soft trim and failed caulk turn up first. Those walls get washed and treated before primer, and we cut back whatever is touching the siding.

FAQ

Wheaton questions

More answers on the FAQ page.

Usually, yes. Plaster gets cut out, taped and skimmed where it has cracked at the corners and ceiling lines, then primed so the patch disappears. Trim can be cleaned, deglossed and coated, or left alone while the walls change color. We will tell you honestly which pieces are worth saving and which are past it.
